South Birmingham College Partnership Lights the Way for Students

Thanks to a successful relationship being built by Contact Electrical Wholesale a new partnership between the college and a state-of-the-art lighting manufacturer has begun to benefit students.

Orbik, an emergency lighting manufacturer based in Aldridge has offered students who are currently placed on the Electrical and Electronic (EAL) Level 3 course the opportunity to visit their factory and see what they've been learning in class put into practice.

Contact Electrical has played an instrumental part in forging the relationship between education and the real world. 22 students on the EAL course visited Orbik the only manufacturer of their kind in the UK and were given a tour of there in-house, state of- the-art facility.

The real benefit will be that each student will have the opportunity to have a one week placement at the factory.

Orbik’s generous offer will allow every student the chance to see and work within all the departments of the organisation. They will gain experience at each stage of the manufacturing process from the initial design to despatch, Including Goods Inwards, manufacturing of components, assembly lines, quality control, test Laboratory, Stores and despatch. This will provide an invaluable insight for the students, many of whom hope to go on to work in related industries.

David Swann, Assistant Director of South Birmingham College has been extremely happy with all the hard work Rob Kendrick, Director of Contact Electrical wholesale has put in to setting up this relationship. When Rob was asked about the reasons he got involved he said, “I saw a great opportunity to help up and coming, enthusiastic and eager students to get a feel of real life work.  As a company we have for a very long time worked with students to ensure they get the best opportunities and takeaway something worthwhile from our interaction”
